Distribution Engineer

Rate of Pay: $4,342-5,970/mo
Working Hours: 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. M-F OT and on-call as necessary
Description: The Distribution Engineer works under the general supervision of the Engineering Supervisor and performs a wide variety of engineering planning and design functions as well as project management. Prepares sectionalizing, relaying and fuse coordination of plant facilities utilizing fault calculations using United Power’s approved Sectionalizing Philosophy. Assists in and the preparation of detailed voltage drop studies of sub-transmission and distribution facilities utilizing present and projected load growth. Assists in the evaluation of switching solutions for both planned and emergency outage situations. Analyzes system requirements. Prepares and revises circuit diagrams, schematic drawings, and other electrical diagrams based on the analyses. Provides effective and progressive engineering data to ensure the development of the company’s facilities in an orderly and economical manner to meet present and future needs when requested. Assists in the preparation of annual engineering budgets and assists in the development and updating of Construction Work Plans in order for management to correlate cost analysis of plant facilities for loan applications and cost/benefit analyses. Acts as Project Manager on line changes, line extensions, new substations and substation improvements, as required. Performs detailed design of new substations and substation additions. Assists in the preparation and details for construction contracts, inspects and monitors construction of large projects. Acts as Field Inspector/Engineer during construction of capital projects. Manages the work of consultants and other contractors on such projects. Manages the SCADA system including troubleshooting and training issues. Works with the assessment and management of load control programs. Acts as back-up to the Planning Engineer on various analysis tasks. Reviews line extension designs and recommends equipment and conductors to be used to support overall system development. Researches and develops new engineering techniques relative to established engineering standards and is involved in the review of new equipment towards developing company-wide standards. Acts as Project Manager on large Specific Capital Projects such as new substations and transmission ties when assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: Must have a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and at least five years experience as a design, planning or operations engineer. A minimum of two (2) years must include electric utility field construction management. Registration as a P. E. in the State of Colorado is preferred. Familiarity with RUS procedures and specifications preferable. Experience with Power System Analysis is helpful. Must have ability to analyze and understand a complex electric problem such as load flow or unbalanced fault. Must hold a valid driver’s license as specified by State statute. Must possess comprehensive project management skills which includes meeting established timelines. Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to react to change productively.
Essential Physical & Mental Demands: Seventy percent (70%) of the time is spent sitting, twenty percent (20%) walking, and another ten percent (10%) standing. Lifting and/or carrying approximately 40 lbs. is done occasionally when taking required equipment to vehicle or to job site. Pushing and pulling up to 50 lbs. is done when opening and closing cabinets, doors, and file drawers. (Further details of physical and mental are listed in the job description dated June, 2010).
