Energy Expo Course Descriptions

Energy Efficiency Basics : 10 a.m. & 1:20 p.m.

Most people have heard about energy audits, but few know what they entail and why they are so important. This presentation will describe the process of energy audits and explain the importance of identifying your main energy efficiency issues before making large investments such as windows, new appliances or renewable energy. You will learn how the energy audit can identify low cost energy saving solutions that will likely result in thousands of dollars in savings on renewable energy solutions.  The presentation will conclude with a discussion on common energy concerns found in the home. Get practical advice from a certified energy expert today.

Renewable Energy Options : 11 a.m. & 12:20 p.m.

Learn if the application of renewable energy is an option for you from one of the State’s leading experts on renewable energy systems.  This seminar will include a detailed overview of solar thermal, solar photovoltaic and small wind systems. Before you invest in renewable technology, attend this free session and review pre-installation design considerations and the expected performance of your system. You will also learn the details of renewable energy system tax credits, rebates and other incentives available to United Power members.

Duct Insulation Workshop : 10 a.m. & 12:20 p.m.

One major aspect of your home’s construction is wasting 20-30 percent of your heating and cooling dollars: your duct system. Ductwork, which carries conditioned air from your furnace or air conditioner throughout your home, is made of highly conductive sheet metal and is often located in unconditioned spaces like unfinished basements and crawlspaces. Due to the extreme temperatures in these locations 10-30 percent of the energy used to heat and cool the air in your home is lost through conduction. Duct insulation will save you 20-30 percent on your heating and cooling costs, improve discharge temperatures from registers by 10-15° and enhance the overall comfort of your home. United Power’s Energy Experts will send you home with the skills and knowledge to complete this project on your own.

Weatherization Workshop : 11 a.m. & 1:20 p.m.

You’ve seen ads touting the benefits of weatherization, and you know it’s something you should ‘get around to’, but maybe you don’t know where to start or what supplies you’ll need. After you attend this workshop you will! Let United Power teach you the difference between weather stripping and caulking and teach you how and where to apply these materials. Learn the benefits of switch and outlet gaskets and ask our energy expert your questions about attic insulation. After this workshop, you’ll be ready to tackle energy savings on your own, and perhaps now you’ll finally ‘get around to it.’

Finding Vampire Watts : 11 a.m.

Do you ever wonder how on earth your electricity bill got so high? Many homeowners work to be conservative with electricity consumption but still have high electric usage; for many, its ghost loads. Many of the appliances found in homes use energy even when they are turned off. This presentation will educate you on common appliances that generate ghost loads and what you can do to reduce these ghost loads and reduce your energy bill.

Buying Efficient Appliances : 12:20 p.m.

As much as you may love that old appliance that fits your needs, or dread the expense of a new one, an energy efficient appliance may save you big money in the long run. Energy efficient appliances can significantly reduce energy consumption, which means more money in your wallet. In this presentation you will learn how to interpret labels and ensure the appliance is truly energy efficient, determine potential savings from efficient appliances, as well as discover available rebates that make your purchases a more affordable reality.

Efficient Heating & Cooling : 1:20 p.m.

More than half of your energy costs are spent heating and cooling your home, so shouldn’t you make the most of that energy? Learn how to make your current system more efficient and, when the time comes, what equipment upgrades are the most efficient, provide the most comfort and have the fastest payback for your investment. This seminar with cover the most efficient options in heating and cooling—from traditional forced-air systems to more efficient geothermal systems. You can be ‘green’ without installing solar panels and this seminar will show you how!
