UPDATED Tuesday, Dec. 16 -

Xcel Energy confirms NO PSPS events should affect United Power service on Wednesday, Dec. 17.

⚠️ In a Red Flag Warning, which has been called for Wednesday, Dec. 17, United Power will operate in Wildfire Safety Mode. Outages remain possible due to high winds, but power will not be preemptively shut off for United Power members. ⚠️

What is Wildfire Safety Mode?

In this mode, United Power's local system is set to the most sensitive settings. Automated devices immediately interrupt power if they detect objects like tree branches touching lines. Crews will inspect the area to ensure the line is clear before power is restored. This measure may result in more frequent or longer outages, but the extra precautions ensure the safety of the local community and electric system.

Dec. 15 -

United Power is actively monitoring extreme weather forecasted for the Front Range on Wednesday, Dec. 17. Members should prepare for possibles outages due to high winds, protective system setting (Wildfire Safety Mode), or a possible public safety power shutoff (PSPS) from Xcel Energy, a transmission provider to United Power.

Extreme weather and high fire risk can impact power in several different ways:

  • During extreme fire weather or Red Flag Warnings, the cooperative may initiate Wildfire Safety Mode.

  • A PSPS initiated by Xcel Energy could interrupt power to United Power members. As a transmission provider to United Power’s service area, the cooperative could lose transmission service if Xcel Energy initiates a PSPS.

  • Extreme weather can also lead to outages unrelated to a PSPS or Wildfire Safety Mode. United Power’s System Operators will be carefully monitoring the system and crews are ready to respond.

United Power will provide updates on social media and on its power shutoff page. If a PSPS is imminent, United Power will attempt to contact affected members directly by phone or email.

Prepare now for weather-related power outages:

  • Stay informed: Log into your United Power account at www.unitedpower.com/SmartHub or via the mobile app to ensure your email and phone number are up to date. Charge electronics so you can access updates.

  • Initiate your backup power plan: If you or someone in your home relies on medical equipment, now is the time to charge batteries and review your backup power plans for prolonged power outages, including evacuation if necessary.

  • Gather essential supplies: Gather supplies to stay safe and comfortable during a power outage, including medicines, food, and water.
