A high-wind event is forecasted across Colorado’s Front Range today, Wednesday, Dec. 17, which could result in unplanned power outages in some areas.

At this time, there are no United Power-planned public safety power shutoffs (PSPS). However, should power be lost to the Xcel Energy transmission line serving the United Power mountain area, restoration will be delayed until the wind event concludes.

Unplanned outages are also possible due to debris or tree limbs in contact with power lines.

To reduce wildfire risk during high-wind conditions, United Power will be operating under protective system settings (Wildfire Safety Mode). In this mode, if anything contacts a power line, power will immediately shut off.

What to Expect

  • If outages occur, they will be extended.
  • For power to be restored, wind conditions must first subside, followed by physical inspections of power lines and equipment.
  • Depending on the extent of damage, inspections and repairs can take significant time.

Stay Safe

  • Always stay away from downed power lines and assume they are energized.
  • Never remove debris from power lines.
  • Have a plan in place for extended outages, including backup power for medical devices if needed.
